Physical CDs available at Old-Time Tiki Parlour: oldtimetikiparlour.com/product/hog-eyed-man-old-world-music-of-the-southern-appalachians/

Hog-eyed Man has always been more of a concept than a band, and the CDs we’ve released are more than just collections of tunes. Each volume is an opportunity to cherish the old sounds learned from musicians mostly now long gone, who themselves were once keeping alive the music and memories of yet earlier Appalachian fiddlers, on back to the brave souls who carried words and melodies across from the Old World. But at the same time that the recordings focus our conversations with the past, they also allow us to document our present-day musical exchanges, with each project reflecting the friends, ideas, instruments, or environments that inspired and sustained us over the past year. On this one, our fourth, we’re joined by our pals Tom, Nancy, Charlie, and Art. It’s easy to make good music with such good company. We are fortunate to get to do it all the time in each other’s living rooms in Athens, GA.

Vol. 4 draws primarily on the old-time fiddling traditions of two regions: eastern Kentucky and our Blue Ridge Mountain homeland of western North Carolina, northern Georgia, and eastern Tennessee. Many of the tunes we focused on for this project have historical connections to the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland and England, while other included pieces are associated with Native American fiddlers and history. In western NC, the Cherokee were adept at fiddling at least as far back as the early 1800s, and the community of Celo, where Jason grew up and learned to fiddle, is named for the Cherokee goddess of corn (“Selu”).

This volume also reflects a few of our own modest contributions. The source fiddlers we admire took good tunes wherever they found them, and, inevitably, made them personal. Each player’s music had a rich and distinctive character. In that spirit, we’ve interpreted and introduced a few Old World pieces that we think are worthy of migration into the modern old-time repertoire. Here or there we let familiar tunes drift into new tunings or time signatures. Throughout, we let our own voices emerge while hewing as best we can to the sensibilities of the earlier fiddling masters who we revere. We are grateful to be on this path, finding new and old joys in this venerable tradition.
